Magnolia Betty & Jane – Magnolia x stellata ‘Betty’, ‘Jane’

Magnolia Jane bloomWe have 2-3 foot Magnolia Betty plants available. We have the available now at a very reasonable price.

Magnolia Betty is a member of a magnolia hybrid collection developed at the National Arboretum in the mid-1950s by Francis DeVos and William Kosar. Other members of the collection include ‘Ann’,  ‘Judy’, ‘Pinkie’, ‘Randy’, ‘Ricki’ and ‘Susan’.

Magnolias like moist, rich, well drained soil. This slow growing tree can grow over time to 10 feet in height with an 8 foot spread but can easily be kept smaller with pruning. Multiple plants can be grown together for an informal hedge.

Magnolia Betty is noted for its large (8 inch cup-shaped), reddish-purple flowers with white interiors and late bloom (mid-April to early May).  They will sporadically re-bloom in mid-summer.

The buds can appear as early as February. Want indoor blossoms early? Take cuttings with buds on them and place them in water in a cool, protected place like your garage. The buds will grow larger and when they start to open put them in a vase and bring them indoors to enjoy.
